I thought that statement of Anri's was metaphorical? Anyway this is how I understand it... Only watched until Ep. 16. Originally, the Saika transfers from person to person as she cuts i.e. "makes love" ergo sex [I'm wondering why there isn't a penis envy/psychoanalysis of the sword being a phallic symbolizing the desire of Saika which is female], but as Shinra said, it wanted to have children. It spreads like a virus amongst humans through the cut, makes copies of itself. Prolly the explanation would be a piece of its soul binds to the human. Saika = AIDS. So eventually it gets to Anri's parents. Anri acquires it, kills her parents and after some time subdues it. A new "server" if you will, took over when the "original server" Saika, "shut down". While Anri is in control of it, she's also a parasite of its ability to love is what she seems to say at the end of ep. 16. Technically, Anri is Saika's host, but she is also a metaphorical "parasite" feeding off on the Saika's ability to love which Anri seems to lack. Anyway, I guess I'll have to read the manga [since it has a different sequence] to fully get it. ![]() "If it's for the sake of seeing others suffer, no effort is too great." ~Prince Baka If you're going to enforce rules, don't be a hypocrite. How come on the first half of the presentation the anime was called "Dulalala"? Ya know after selty attacks sky for no reason at the end of the OP song.
|

Because R's and L's are basically interchangeable in Japanese, and Celty as a Dullahan, not a Durrahan. Now it's called "DRRR!!!" They are doing it to amuse, and I for one find it amusing.

Thanks to this anime being the Fansub.TV recommendation I gave it a try. I've only seen two episodes so far but the characters seem to be quite complex and the story is peppered with mystery. I plan to keep watching as it appears that there will be some interesting twists and turns as the story develops. It looks as though Mikado's life is going to become a lot more interesting now that he's in the big city. There certainly seem to be a lot of dangerous people his friend recommends that he avoid. I'm looking forward to learning more about the "black rider" that has become the stuff of urban legends.

I thought DRRR = sound of a revving motorbike? |

Well, I think Kida's past was by far the most compelling backstory ive seen in Durarara so far. Maybe because it was also closely interwined with Izaya.
I wouldnt be surprised if Izaya was double dealing and sold information to Izumi about Saki and Kida's relationship. Its obvious that Izaya wanted to put Kida in this position since he pratically pimped out Saki initially. Although what was most interesting was when I think Izaya identified himself as the joker and got annoyed. The Joker is a wild card which hints at mental instability. I hope he can keep it together. Episode 18 was sooooo good as Franz said Kida's past is definitely one of the most intriguing backstories to any character so far revealed in Durarara.
I did feel sorry for Kida and Saki, and Saki's scream when she got her leg broken over the phone was terrifying....I literally felt the pain with just the sound. Saki is a nice girl but I too feel she lost a screw somewhere and the reason why she depends on Izaya sooo much. Oh, as Franz also pointed out when Izaya confirms himself to be the "joker" (I believe this is the case) and gets peeved about his conclusion. He is definitely mentally instable compared to most of the other characters but imo I believe most of the characters in this series are definitely not "normal", they are in fact quite extreme. |

I started watching it because Julezia said she watches it. Oh yeaaaaahhhh, fantastic anime. I probably will have to rewatch it when it finishes airing, due to the complexity I feel I am missig half of the context.
The title of the anime is kindo misleading. Sounds like an anime title for mindless moe/harem anime. I didnt even bother to check it out and I was missing out big time. |

EDIT: Watched episode 18 and..... lots of things happening. The scene with saki and both her legs broken gave me creeps. I had to think back to the scene where Kida asked her, if she would jump off the bridge if Izaya told her so. She said that she would. Izayas presence in the hospital means no good. Chances are, he told Saki to jump out of the hospital window to drive Kida nuts from guilt. The fact that Kida and Saki had a serious discussion right before only makes Kida believe its his fault.
As for Izaya, I wouldnt necessarily call him unstable. He is a psychopat. He knows very well what he is doing. By the looks of it he is extremely smart and that combined with a psychopatic personality disorder is an explosive combination. The saddest part is, that he understands people. He knows what they feel, how they think, the pain they go through. You can tell by the insight he has into the inner thoughts of others, how much he understands them. And yet no compassion whatsoever. He understands their pain and uses it for his own purposes. Dangerous psycho!!! He is not like the typical anime bad guy, he doesnt set up plans where he must force people to do things they dont want to do. Izaya is different...... he observes, he analyses and then he simply uses peoples own nature against them. By simple comments in the right moment he pushes people into the "right" direction, he doesnt force them into anything per se, they do it on their own.... after being deviously guided in that direction by Izaya. He is a real something alright, kudos to his twisted intellect!!! I also found Izaya in real life. Goran kudasai: |

I wouldnt say that Izaya is unstable either. Just like warita already said, he fully knows what he does and what the concequences are.
He is like me, intelligent but only using that for himself and doing what he wants without considering how hurt other people could get because of that. Just like me he just doesnt feel something for anyone except himself. Still I cant really see what he wants to acclomplish, but it must be big if his plans were beginning already over a year ago. Kidas past wasnt that surprising. Except for the point that Izaya had his hands in it nothing happened what I wasnt really anticipating. Im really looking forward to the big showdown, when Mikado, Kida and Anri see whos really behind the Yellow Scarves, the Slasher-incidents and the Dollars and how they will act because of that. And I wonder how they will deal with Izaya afterwards. My Animelist Top 5 of currently airing TV-series:(03.06.11) 1. Deadman Wonderland 2. Steins;Gate 3. Dog Days 4. It is funny when you think about
Those three high school kids are really running the city |

yeah, but that can only happen in anime, right? I wonder why I bother writin anything longer then one line. Nobody seems to care anyways...... |

Oh wait, just wanted to burst out a comment: -
Izaya is nothing compared to Oh Seung Ha from The Devil (Mawang) but I gotta admit Izaya has his creepy charm. Also, I'm gonna stick with him being mentally unstable and despite not completely showing it, there will be a time where he will completely flip. Plus, he is "broken" because of his lack of compassion. |

I hope so warita200 But when you think about how the guy started the dollars, thats totally plausible. Think of it as an anonymous facebook |

So Izaya's goal is basically to create chaos right? By having all three gangs fight it out, and then somehow get Celty involved and I guess he will give her head back and a supernatural occurrence is supposed to happen? Something about Valkyries? I can't really remember what he said, it sounded like nonsense to me at the time lol
But if the leaders of all three gangs realize who the enemy leader actually is, I don't suppose that they will fight, but maybe it will be hard to stop their followers from doing so. Also I wonder when Simon is supposed to play his part in all of this? lo PS. Wowza warita found a real life Izaya lookalike! ![]() "If you have time to think of a beautiful end, then live beautifully until the end." -Sakata Gintoki (Gintama) My Animelist My Top Five Currently Airing Animes: (Updated: 2011/06/01) |

The theory that Dullahans are actually Valkyries. That's what he was ranting on about. Valkyries as you prolly know, bring the souls of worthy warriors to Valhalla to fight in the Ragnarok. Something like that. Anyway, Shinra's pop is trying to uncover the secret to Celty's head [you know, how it's all "detached" from her body] and uses a scientific perspective. Izaya's trying to study the head in a similar fashion but from an entirely different angle and with different questions, like "how many people should I get to kill each other in order to "awaken" this head?" and his Dullahan = Valkyrie theory. Also, I don't think Izaya's mentally imbalanced. He has a lot in common with Greg House [House MD]... Okay scratch that, he IS insane. -EDIT-
Ugh, yeah, should've been more specific with that. It is interesting to point out though that some stories, games and shows tend to "fiddle" with the Valkyries' roles. Some of them make the Valkyries out as "soul reapers of the battlefield", reaping the souls of both the dead and the surviving "chosen/worthy" warriors. [Not sure where people got this idea but I guess a "darker and more sinister" type of Valkyrie is wicked cool.] This might be where the idea that Dullahan = Valkyrie came from. lol disregard all that.... I suck you-know-whats....I remember now, "Choosers of the Slain" [Currently playing a Valkyrie Profile game, yeah, it's Covenant of the Plume.]. Lol so yeah, Norse mythology actually has it that Valkyries choose who die. So yeah, Dullahan has that similarity with Valkyries. ![]() "If it's for the sake of seeing others suffer, no effort is too great." ~Prince Baka If you're going to enforce rules, don't be a hypocrite. I think that sums it up nicely. Maybe for Celtys head to awaken a war is needed. Lots of people must die.... for as far as I can remember, the valkyiers take the souls of the dead warriors with them, not the living people. I guess since there is not major war going on in Japan, Izaya wants to create a war. What left me wondering is..... what does he want to achieve by this? Does he want to be taken by her? Oo Interesting way to commit suicide, LOL |

Wow this is just a mess. The way the gangs are all interlinked makes the situation much more complicated. It really is quite chaotic, and only one person can thrive on this chaos.
The way Izaya is influencing the situation is masterful but he really is a cancer. If he was just planning a three way gang war, fair enough, but he plans for an all out war between gang members as well. I can tell he is definitely enjoying the process. And now i understand why Shizuo and Izaya dont get along. Its the kinda thing where it takes a pyscho to understand a pyscho. Although Shizuo is fairly simple minded, he is the only one, i feel, who sees Izaya for what he really is and his true intentions. The worst thing for someone like Izaya is exposure and Shizuo could expose him. That is why Shizuo is the "King." Did you ever watch Dexter, the TV series about a serial killer who works as a forensic scientist in the Miami police department? Seemingly everyone in the series buys into his outward charms and effectiveness at work without question, but there is this one detective who see's right through his facade to the soulless sociopath that he truly is right from their first meeting. Shizuo is that detective to Izaya. |
